I eat in the dining hall 1-2 times per week and get coffee 2-3 times per week. I routinely get the “red tofu” sandwich from RedDoor or the daily offering at Brown’s plant-based station. For the items I order, the food is correctly labeled about 70% of the time. The vegan option for the “red tofu” sandwich routinely causes confusion. The most memorable “version” of the vegan “red tofu” sandwich that I received included melted vegan cheese on top of the tofu with cold dairy-based cheese beneath the bottom of the sandwich. Typically, the sandwich does not contain cheese of any sort. Annoyingly, I was also charged $1.75 extra for this version.

Upon coming to Caltech, I was very happy to see that there were vegan options provided by the plant based section during lunch, as well as plant-based milk alternatives at Red Door! I think the CDS has done a great job in providing delicious vegan options during lunch. Some of my favorite dishes have been the tteokbokki, lentil curry, Mediterranean grain bowl, and stew. During dinner, finding vegan options is more difficult. Occasionally, there is no vegan option offered at all, or the food choices are either limited, lacking variety, or labeled incorrectly. Overall, I am glad that Caltech currently offers vegan options and I hope to see more in the future! I think making delicious vegan food more accessible is one of the most effective ways in reducing the barrier towards a plant-based diet.
